I Love You Roz Warren!

I’m publishing a book and it’s all Roz Warren’s fault!

Last September, after reading an article she posted, I submitted a cat story to the publisher, Austin MacCauley,

Accidently, I sent it to general submissions, not Chicken Soup.

A few weeks later, to my shock, I received an email asking if I had more stories for a collection or perhaps, a manuscript.

I did and sent that.

Weeks went by. I heard nothing and assumed it had been rejected.

I wrote Part One of this story:

Then, four months after the initial conversation, the publisher reached out again.

The editorial committee was intrigued by my draft. Had I finished the manuscript yet?

It turned out a request for additional stories had been lost somewhere in cyberspace.

After a few panicked calls and an email to Roz, it seemed the issue was word count- I had only sent 11, 000 and they had asked for 20,000.

I added 9000 words, including poetry, and changed the title to “stories and other writing”.

Again, weeks went by and my hopes sunk.

I started a dozen new pieces but failed to write more than a few opening lines.

I stopped posting on Medium. I even stopped reading and supporting all my favorites writers. ( I feel really, really bad about that)

Then a message:

Having read all the reports and taken note of the Editor’s opinions we can confidently state that your work was found to be a thought-provoking memoir that takes a nuanced perspective on pet ownership….

The comments indicated they had read it and read it thoughtfully.

We would like to offer you a contributory contract at this time

Hybrid publishing is the term — meaning I must participate, to a small degree, financially.

My children screamed, “nanny scam”.

But, it seems reasonable to me.

I am an unknown writer, with a niche book about a veterinarian’s life. A traditional publisher is unlikely to take an interest and I know nothing about production and marketing.

What do I have to lose besides a few bucks?

So, wish me luck

And Roz, thank you!! Thank you for writing and making me laugh, thank you for sharing your experience and incites, and thank you for answering my emails!
